MEET4IMPACT’s Made Raie explains why destinations are evolving from event hosts into strategic partners for impact.

In an article published ahead of the 2026 GDS-Forum and Impact Day, Made Raie examines the evolving role of destination management organisations. Destinations are no longer expected only to attract and host events; they can become catalysts for collaboration and long-term change.

A regenerative event economy seeks to create value that strengthens places. DMOs can connect event objectives with local priorities, mobilise community organisations, research institutions and public actors, and help organisers embed those relationships in their strategies.

Impact should be considered before destination selection, integrated into event design and supported after the event closes. Destinations are well placed to provide that continuity through their knowledge of the local ecosystem.
